I'm still working on the next book, and I at least feel like I'm coming down the home stretch.  I'm at the tail end of the actual writing (just over 50,000 words now, and I'll probably squeeze another 10,000 to 20,000 words out of it).  After this comes editing and formatting, a long and tedious project.  I keep telling family members and friends that this is probably going to be my last book.  They poo-poo this idea, telling me that I'm just tired and stressed out, and once this book is finished and published, I'll be right back at writing.  This kind of reminded me of having a baby.  You swear, during the birth pangs, that you will never ever do this again, making this proclamation loudly and very adamantly, but there you go... I've had seven (babies that is).

So hopefully, in the not too distant future, like maybe this year, you'll be able to find book #6 smiling and showing its face to the world:  The Ultimate Tarot Guide:  For Your Personal Tarot Journey, Study Guide & Workbook

As I was taping this month's Newsletter Video, the weather was becoming *Darker and Darker and Darker* and soon it began to rain, so during various sections of this video you may hear the rhythmic plunk, plunk plunk of water leaking around the sky-lights on my porch roof, you'll hear the steady sound of rain, and occasionally the wind will rise. It's all good.

There's a nice Q&A section at the beginning where I explain a little bit about my online coven experience and why I won't do it again; you'll also hear some court case questions, as well as other questions and answers dealing with Black Cat Oil and the use of Rosemary & Amythyst in the bedroom.

The second portion of this video deals with my personal experience with Independent Publishing. I really believe that this is a new wave for the future. There's also informal chatting about writing, deciding to write a book, and snippets of all kinds of ideas based around this topic.

Hope you enjoy your visit though this video and the awesome summer weather!!

Lammas
(August 1)

As the matron of ancient times would start early to prepare her family for the harsh winter months ahead, so the Mother Goddess prepares us. She reminds us of the bounty yet to come with an early harvest of grain. She encourages us to take stock of what we have, and this pertains to the physical harvests, of course, but it can also include taking stock of ourselves, re-evaluating our goals, our lives, our paths, our relationships, our strengths, and our weaknesses.

This is the first of the harvest festivals, and in the ancient world this was indeed a time of celebration. A successful harvest would mean survival in the harsh winter months. In the northern countries this was, in particular, a celebration of the first harvest of wheat, thus bread is featured in the celebration of Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh.

As the modern day Pagans celebrate this festival they will build roaring bonfires, feed each other a mouthful of bread, and with wine they will toast each other..."May you eat the bread of life."

My Celebration:

Yes, it's a harvest festival. Yes, bread and wheat, as well as other grains, figure into it. But for me, it was more about the passage of time. It's about how time plays tricks on us, and as a child on summer vacation from school, these three months seemed like a whole year rolled up into one magickal moment.

August 1 in South Dakota meant lots of lingering blistering summer days ahead, the heat being almost as intense as July; but it also meant something different in the air, that faint scent (an autumn scent), a nuance of change in the sunlight, the slight tinge starting at the edge of the leaves. And then one morning, being greeted with crisp air and a sky so blue it was almost painful to look at, so beautiful it was.

This holiday, this moment in time, is a mystery. It is the ability to look back into the past while standing on some invisible magickal horizon so that you can see the future, but just enough of the future to tease you forward. And you come to this exact same time and place year after year. August 1, another summer coming to a close, one of so many, and another autumn returning. An end, to make way for something new to begin, again, and again, and again.

The figure standing on the horizon grows, matures, changes, morphs, ages, expands, learns, regrets, loves, hates, wonders, questions, fears, laughs, and listens. The figure on the horizon passes through a human life time in the blink of an eye, with one inaudible breath...and then they fade into an ethereal creature of smokey wisps with a voice that is but the wind.

Binding a Gossip

Most of you reading this has, at one time or another, been the victim of malicious and false rumors, innuendos, or flat out bald face lies. This phenomena used to be contained to the narrow crowded hallways of junior and senior high schools, the quiet corridors of office buildings, the loud backrooms of break-rooms, local neighborhood cafes and bars…etc. With the advent of the internet, instant communication, and access that was previously unheard of, this interesting little social oddity is becoming more prevalent than ever, easier to manipulate, to spread, and much more destructive because of the wider audience and the hit and run methods available to anyone with a computer, cell-phone, etc. However, even in the 21st century, gossip still travels the old fashioned way: by word of mouth.

And what makes gossip so popular is our naïve desire to believe what we hear, regardless of the source, whether facts check out, whether it makes sense, or even whether it is believable– the more fantastic and incredible the story, in fact, the quicker we are to accept it, or to eagerly pass it along.

There may not be much the mundane victim of gossip can do about it, other than an expensive and time consuming lawsuit perhaps, if the perpetrator of this brouhaha is sullying a public reputation, damaging a business, or causing serious complications in the victim’s life.

But there is something a Witch can do about a gossip.

She can bind the mouth of the one who is spreading untruths & fantastic stories. She can tie their tongue and still their voice. She can throw the negative energy they are generating back upon the perpetrator, where it will fester and putrefy, to destroy the hooligan from the inside out.

A Binding:

I have used the following spells personally, and I can tell you that they worked for me, often in explosive and unpredictable ways which left me open-mouthed and in awe of this magick. Karma has a way of stepping in to handle any injustice of life, and I have no qualms about stepping into the shadows to grab the light and use this energy to kick-ass. This is one of the benefits of being a gray witch.

If you have the magickal ability, control of your energies, determination and purpose, and if you’ve just plain had enough…you’ll find these spells to be just what you need.

For serious situations, use all three of these methods in tandem:

The Mirror:

Purchase a small hand mirror, one large enough for a small picture to fit within its center. Take a photo of the target and cut it out; lay it in the center of the mirror…vent now at the target, let all the negative energy that you feel for this person roil and boil to the surface, spit in his/her face if that is your inclination.

When you have spent yourself expressing your anger…sprinkle over this picture goofer dust, graveyard dirt, banishing powder. You could also add cayenne pepper, or any other herb/ingredient that you have successfully used in the past or that is linked to hexes/curses.

Now, encircle this picture with it’s mound of maliferous ingredients with a circle of salt– sealing the target within.

Find a safe place to keep this charm, perhaps beneath a dresser; and cover it with a bowl if you have pets in the house so that they won’t stumble upon it. Every once in a while, perhaps in conjunction with a waning moon phase, pull the mirror carefully out of its hiding place and re-sprinkle it with a bit of the powders; check the seal of salt and add to it if need be to keep the circle strong…each time you bring it out– throw your emotions at this individual.

The Poppet:

In addition– you can create a crude poppet, pin a photo of the face of the target on the face of the doll. Carefully, slowly, deliberately– stick straight pins through the mouth in a neat little row…unless the perpetrator is especially disgusting and deceitful– in that case, sew the damn mouth shut, using a strand of the target’s own hair if that is a possibility…rant, rave, spit, pound, stomp, rage. Throw your hatred and anger at this figure, then cover it in a black cloth and place it away in a secret spot.

The Witch’s Bottle:

You can also create a witch’s bottle…fill an empty bottle with pins, razor blades, shards of glass, needles, rusty nails– and a photo of the target. Add your urine to it. Close the bottle and seal it with black wax. Put it in a safe place and every once in a while, again with the waning of the moon, bring it out and shake it up— visualize the sharp objects in the bottle slashing at the target and all they represent…the injustice, the deceit, the vulgarity, the lies.

As I’ve said…

I’ve used these spells myself and was quite amazed at how well they work. But the deal is that this is an ‘ongoing’ thing, keep it up. Remember to check the mirror, less the circle of salt somehow get shifted about and create an opening. Don’t let the target sit in the bottle without bothering it now and then. Bring out the poppet, look into the target’s eyes and vent your rage ever so often…don’t let them forget, and don’t let them rest.

The energy will build.

Money Magick?

What else could it be?

(Originally posted @
Magickal ConnectionsAugust 2011)

My daughter recently bought a new car.  The price she had to pay for the car was $1800.00.  She went to her bank and asked the cashier for this amount in a cashier’s check, which the lady immediately made out and my daughter cashed on the spot in order to pay this man in cash.  The cashier counted out the money into my daughter’s hand.

My daughter immediately took this money to the car dealer and paid him for the car, counting out $1800.00 cash to this man.  Three people witnessed this event:  my daughter, the car dealer, and my daughter’s friend Anna.  The dealer handed over the keys to the new car, and the deal was done.

Several days later, my daughter gets her bank statements in the mail.  It was off.  It was off by $1000.00 in her favor.  She had one thousand dollars more in her account that she should have had.  Looking at the statement, we saw that the cashier’s check which was written out to pay for the car was made out as $800.00, not $1800.00.

We went to the bank today to straighten out this error.

The bank employee was extremely puzzled and, quite frankly, a little more than amazed.

The facts were:

1.  The cashier’s check was, indeed, made out for $800.00 instead of $1800.00.  We assumed that the cashier, chatting away with my daughter, had made a mistake in writing out the amount on the check, but she had obviously counted out the right amount of cash into my daughter’s hand.

2.  The cashier’s till-box count and records for that day would have shown an error if she had written a cashier’s check for $800.00, and then handed out $1800.00 in cash.  However, the cashier’s till-box count and records for that day were all correct– showing that an $800.00 check had been written, and $800.00 had been given to the recipient (my daughter).

3.  My daughter swore that the cashier had counted out $1800.00 into her hand, and then she had immediately recounted it in front of the lady.  However, when the bank reviewed the video tape of this transaction, it was evident that the cashier had only counted out $800.00.

No one knows what to think, and no one has a logical explanation for what happened.  What makes it so odd is that my daughter obviously had the correct amount on her for the car ($1800.00), because the car dealer would not have handed the car over to her if she had not paid the correct amount.

So, where did the $1000.00 come from?

The bank employee’s explanation…Money Fairies.

August ~ Crafting Your Magick

The Barley Moon is the time to reap the harvest of magic cast at the beginning of the summer season. It’s a time for the powerful assertive energy of Leo to give way to the calmer vibrations of Virgo. Do magic at this time to cleanse before the winter, cleansing not only your personal space, but intangible aspects as well. Clear out unwanted rubbish, whether it be inertia, conflict, indecisiveness, or some other personal weakness. As the summer winds down and wildlife begins to prepare itself for the dark months to come, this is where the heart of your magic lay as well.

Tarot Lesson Today:
Princess of Swords

I’ve been reading tarot for quite some time, and I began reading just for myself and my family. Needless to say, over the years, every court card in the deck became a family member to me, filled with both positive and negative traits. (And I have to say here, just so we’re clear, that not every family member or individual will mirror *all* the negative personality traits associated with the card, or *all* the positive traits– most people are a healthy mixture of each. It’s those few who go to extremes that make it really interesting, but not always pleasant.) The court cards are interesting in that they are a psychological profile for a variety of personalities, and once you become familiar with these characters, you will notice that when you meet someone, you will automatically associate them with one of the tarot court cards, at least this is my experience.

The Princess of Swords**…first, the following is an excerpt from my book, “Tarot for Grownups”, and in this book I very clearly state the positive and negative aspects of this character from both extremes:

First, the negative side (ouch):

This Page is a bitch in the making. He/she is a younger version of the King or Queen of swords. It’s already difficult carrying on a conversation with this Page, because everything is all about them; it’s the only topic they care to discuss. They’re conversation is blunt, verging on rude. Vanity is already at work here, and because of their youth and immaturity, it can actually get to the point of ridiculous. They have a skewered view of how attractive they really are, or how accomplished, how smart, etc. Even now, and very sadly, they are setting a solitary path for themselves by alienating people who may actually love them. They treat people like shit, and then act all puzzled when friends and acquaintances disappear.

Now, the softer side:

Like all the personalities of this suit, this Page is the most intelligent and usually has a very high IQ. They tend to have a sort of tunnel vision when they are engrossed in the study of something in particular or are involved in a hobby. This Page shares all the swords outwardly cool mannerisms, which so often masks a sensitivity they try to hide. This individual will often latch onto relationships with pets in order to protect themselves from the possibility of being hurt in human relationships. It’s a survival mechanism.

As you can see above, I’ve listed the extremes. Individuals that I know, who are connected to this card, have in reality run a happy medium. They’re smart, so smart it’s scary sometimes, and they love academics. The person this card stands for in my world will be a life-time student…learning, writing, reading, teaching; this will be part of their existence for as long as they live. The softer side also shows up for them, in that they love animals and have, over the years, acquired their own little menagerie. And I do believe that the reason they have this deep connection with animals is that it’s easier for them to relate– animals (pets) love you for who you are just the way you are, it’s a kind of unconditional love that most human beings are not capable of.

Now the fun part, this is where you get to add your two cents, as it were. It might be a good idea to grab a notebook and pen so you can jot down answers and impressions as they come to you:

1) What color on this card catches your eye first?

For me, it’s ‘blue’. My interpretation of this color…the element of Water, pointing to dreams, visions, psychism, intuition, and emotions. I feel this card is awash in human emotions, some smooth and tranquil and others roiling and churning. Blue is also the color connected to the throat chakra, and this tells me that issues of communication are being raised, perhaps new lines of communication need to be opened. I also connect the color ‘blue’ to the goddess (and the Virgin Mary)– perhaps this is from my years in a Catholic Parochial school, passing the life-size statue of Mary in the hallway, wearing beautiful sky blue robes.

2) What element is the court card connected with?

The suit of swords is connected to the element of Air…also emphasizing once more communication– now I’m really paying attention. Whenever an issue like this surfaces more than once, or keeps resurfacing, a red flag should be going up. Along with communication, creativity and mental endeavors are highlighted, but it’s this communication issue that I’m focused on. So what’s the deal? Who’s not talking to whom? What relationship in this individual’s life is breaking down; how can we get the lines of communication cleared and running again? Your mind should already be spinning with the reading of this card.

3) What image, or images, on this card jump out at you?

I’m just going to let my mind roam here, and you should do the same thing…

Yellow halos around the characters head and the sword: Catholic saints come to mind, the idea of sainthood, medieval artwork, purity of mind and intentions; but also illusions and delusions. (Has communication broken down because of a misinterpretation somewhere along the line?) Also, Excalibur, and with this image comes all the pomp and integrity of ancient knights.

Her bare feet planted solidly on the stones: stubbornness; digging in for the long haul; not wanting to be the first to back down. But also, someone who tends to be very level headed, maybe even conventional, someone who’s solidly grounded, not easily swayed; someone who has a game plan and generally sticks to it.

The bird in flight behind the Princess: an idea taking flight, an expression of freedom or a desire for freedom, something that this individual maybe hasn’t thought of yet, but something that will come to them in time; also, with this bird, comes a stronger connection to the element of Air and all that it entails– this is telling me to pay attention, it’s reinforcing the idea of communication as a central theme to the reading of this card.

The flowers: to me they are indicative of spring. I’m so often asked for a specific time-line when it comes to readings, but very rarely does this come to me; and when it does, it generally comes to me through the idea of seasons or moon phases. When I looked at the flowers on this card, that little voice in the back of my head, the one that’s only a light whisper, barely audible…it said “Spring”. This would indicate to me that this season is important to this individual for some reason, or it means that the events surrounding this reading are going to culminate around springtime.

We’ve answered three questions in connection with this card, and look at all the information that was revealed in these three questions. Look beyond what you have written down as your own answers. If necessary, pick apart each interpretation to take it to a deeper level– for instance, I mentioned my association with the color blue to the Virgin Mary. I could take this one step deeper and list all the associations that I have for this deity. Do you see what I mean? You can keep going ever deeper, from one impression to the next, bringing out unexpected results. Mind you, this type of individual card analyses doesn’t have to be done as part of a reading for someone; this can be done as a private meditation, in which you will uncover layers of your own psyche. Then there’s that little voice I was talking about, it’s your sub-conscious mind actually, and it’s so easy to dismiss it, or not notice it at all; it really can be this subtle, and it takes some practice to hear it.

Plantain:
Magickal & Mundane

The perfect carpet of suburban green lawn does not exist at our house. We don’t have a conventional lawn at all, we have what’s been called “pasture”.  Within it grows numerous types of plants, many of them labeled ‘weeds’ by the more pristine lawn connoisseurs.  (A weed’s a flower too, once you get to know it– I saw this quote just yesterday somewhere, probably Facebook.)

One of the wild green things growing freely in our lawn is a plant called Plantain.  You can see it in the foreground of this photo.  It grows with wild abandonment in our yard, most often in cliquish little clumps here and there.  In the early stages you won’t see the long seed stems, just the wide green leaves close to the ground.

Every year I gather bunches of plantain, filling a large glass jar, squashing the leaves down, getting as much as I can into one container, on my knees, going from one island of plantain to another, front and back yard.  This is an extraordinarily versatile plant, both magickally and mundanely speaking– which I value greatly. I’m going to start with the conventional side of plantain, some of the practical uses it can be valued for, sort of like nature’s medicine cabinet…

For Insect Bites:

Cover fresh insect stings (from bees, wasps, or hornets) with wet crushed plantain leaves.  Replace the leaves as they dry out.  The idea is to press out the poison, to draw it out, as well as to relieve any discomfort at the same time.

For Inflammation:

Wrap bruised wet plantain leaves around the infected area, keeping them wet by covering them with a plastic bag or a wet cloth.  Be sure to keep the leaves wet.  It’s been said that plantain works on infected finger sores where conventional antibiotic ointments have failed.

An Herbal Ointment:  Plantain Liquefied Ointment

(An ointment is a soothing healing balm made with a base of oil, lard, grease, or petroleum, into which you’ve added herbs and plants for medicinal purposes.  It’s most simply made by heating your base and adding your other ingredients; then pouring the mixture into a container to cool and thicken, and this process can be helped along if you wish by adding bees wax, coco butter, or honey.  If you’ve a mind to, you can add a couple drops of benzoin, glycerin, or a preservative to the mix, but I’m a purist at heart, and either I’ll use a batch of ointment up in good time, or I’ll eventually toss it out and make a new one as needed.)

2 1/2 cups fresh plantain leaves
1 1/2 cups wheat germ oil
1/2 cup honey

Mix the what germ oil and the honey in a blender, adding fresh plantain leaves.  Blend well, then scrape this mixture into a container of your choice (I prefer small glass jars), and be sure you label it.  To help the mixture harden up to the right consistency, add 2 1/c tablespoons of hot bees wax.

Now the fun stuff, we’re going to leave the conventional world behind and look at all the wonderous magickal– wiccan, pagany, witchcrafty ways we can make use of Plantain.  This is a plant that I use a lot– I mean a lot— for a variety of magick and intentions.

First, I’m a fuss-budget, a worry wart– a mother– and I want my family to be safe whenever they are traveling in a vehicle, and I don’t care if it’s across town for a gallon of milk, or across the country to visit family.  There must be, absolutely must be, a small bag of plantain and calamus root in everyone’s vehicle.  It’s priceless, believed to protect travelers from harm, and as I’ve said before, I take a good deal of stock in it– my oldest daughter has totaled two cars on Omaha’s freeways, and she’s walked away without a scratch both times, her mojo bundle of herbal magick tucked beneath the driver’s seat.

Another protective use for plantain is to keep your property safe from theft:  in good old-fashioned mojo tradition, fill a blue flannel bag with plantain and place it in the four corners, or at the four compass points, around your property.

Use plantain magickally to cure illness:  it’s believed that by writing the name of the inflicted person three times on a small piece of paper, wrapping this paper in a plantain leaf, and laying the leaf on the heart of the patient, you can chase out the disease and restore good health. (I know I sound like I have a lot of faith in plantain’s magickal and mundane abilities, but for gawd’s sake, use some common sense– you can mix good old folk magick right along with a fabulous thing known as ‘modern medicine’.  I don’t want to hear of anyone stopping routine medical care by competent medical professionals and replacing it with folk remedies alone…really.)

If you’re the victim of someone with a big mouth and a little brain, you can stop one and/or the other with a mixture of crushed dried plantain leaves and slippery elm (Shut yo’ mouth…says it all).  I think I’d prefer to do a little candle magick with this combo– oil up a yellow candle with a good oil of your choice, roll it in the herbs, place it in a cauldron or other fire-proof container and burn away…and just for good measure, I’d place a slip of paper with the target’s name on it beneath the candle– and if you get your hands on a photo of them, which is so darn easy to do in this internet/Facebook world, you can really go to town. Knock yourself out.
