Metal Magick

"According to the fragmentary writings of those early peoples, alchemy was to them no speculative art. They implicitly believed in the multiplication of metals; and in the face of their reiterations both the scholar and the materialist should be more kindly in their consideration of alchemical theorems." ~Manly P. Hall, The Secret Teachings of All Ages

Copper

Energy: receptive (feminine)

Planet: Venus

Element: Water

Powers: direction energy; healing; luck; love; protection; money

During ancient times in Mesopotamia, copper was attributed to the Queen of Heaven, as well as to goddesses associated with the planet Venus (Aphrodite, Astarte, Ishtar). Copper is a conductor of electricity and is often used in magickal wands, with clear quartz crystals, to direct energy. Copper is worn by magickal practitioners, as well, for the purpose of directing energy during spell crafting and rituals. Copper has the ability to balance receptive (feminine) and projective (masculine) energies in the human body, thus facilitating healing. Copper is worn to aid in the relief of rheumatism and arthritis, but is worn for general healing and to divert illnesses of all kinds. It’s considered a lucky metal and is often worn in conjunction with gemstones geared to bring good fortune. Copper can be worn to attract a lover and is often paired with an emerald for this purpose.

Brass

Energy:
projective (masculine)

Planet: Sun

Element: Fire

Powers: healing, money, protection

Brass can be used as a magickal substitution for gold, and is often used in money spells and rituals. Brass can be worn or used with stones to attract money and prosperity, such as aventurine and pyrite. It’s also used in ritual healing and can be worn to ease stomach cramps and nose bleeds. Brass is a protective metal, and can be worn to guard you against physical, emotional, or psychic attack. It can also be used for defensive magick, to send negative energy back to its source, and it can be charged and worn for this purpose.

Silver

Energy: receptive (feminine)

Planet: Moon

Element: Water

Powers: love, psychism, dreams, protection, travel (physical & astral), money

When worn, silver stimulates psychic awareness and personal abilities and is often worn during divination. You can wear silver to bed to enhance prophetic dreams and to aide in astral travel. It’s a protective talisman worn by travelers, particularly to those traveling on or over water. Silver is connected to the energy of the Moon and the Goddess (feminine divinity), and can be worn to aide in a Wiccan ritual known as “Drawing Down the Moon”.

Candle Magick

How-To

Candles and crystals and flowers - what more do you need for a witch's altar?

Magick…it’s as easy as striking a match and lighting a candle.  It is, really.  It’s called ‘candle magick’, and there is a rhyme and reason behind it.

(I know, this post might be boring for all the practicing witches out there who do this type of magic all the time, those who’ve done it for years, those who can do it blind-folded. But there are so many new witches on the horizon, so many emails and questions coming in, bear with me.  Everyone has their own little way of doing things, everyone has discovered magickal little tweaks that work for them, there is a gazillion ways to do magick. Pass your information along!)

First…Intention

What do you want? What are you trying to change? What’s your magickal intention? You have to know; you have to be specific; you have to have thought this out, have it squared away in your head. It has to be strong and definite in your mind, or you will not be able to successfully move the energy along to manifest this intention into the world.

Second…Candle Color

Once you definitely know what you want, what you’re trying to accomplish with this magick, you have to decide on what color of candle you’ll need. This is important. The color of the candle is associated with very definite images, intentions, magick; connected even to the elements (earth, air, fire, water); connected to the planets (astrological/magickal associations). Everything is so connected it’s unreal; most people have no idea.

Red Candles

For the element of Fire, for the planet Mars– it’s all about hot sizzling passion, whether your intention is for physical passion with a prospective mate, or just that wild over-the-top passion for justice or a particular cause. Red candles will create the kind of energy that moves things along like gang-busters. Think of those phrases: “too hot to handle”, “red-hot”, “I’m seeing red”; there’s a reason for these confirmations.

Green Candles

For the element of Earth– health and money, two basic necessities of life. Face it, you won’t be living very well if you don’t have enough of either one. The green candle for planet Earth– Mother Gaia, the embodiment of our world, a metaphor for the Mother Goddess, representative of our physical world (our bodies). Just as people of other spiritual paths request healing and prosperity from their god(s), so the witch turns to divinity, but in her case, it’s not a request, as divinity is part of the witch and the witch is part of divinity. It’s a different relationship within the metaphysical realm.

Yellow Candles

For the element of Air, for the planet Mercury– communication, creativity, mental endeavors. it’s all about pure thought, our mind, that intangible part of ourselves that make us who we are. Those cliques that are coming to me right now: “thoughts move mountains”, “what we think is what we are”. The mental aspect of us is the most powerful, some believing that it embodies our soul, our spirit, that which will survive eternally. It’s also about communication– communication with other human beings, with divinity, with ourselves. Use the yellow candle when you have something to say, something that needs to be heard.

Blue Candles

For the element of Water…light a blue candle to invoke the Goddess, to enhance your dreams and intuition. Use the blue candle to come to terms with your emotions, for understanding, for resolution, for enhancement. The blue candle for the heavenly body, the Moon: pagan spirituality, the goddess (all three aspects), magick, blessings, running with the tide (waxing and waning– drawing in, sending away). Use the blue candle for women’s issues, with the knowledge that you are tapping into something indescribably ancient and indescribably wise.

White Candles

You can use a white candle as a substitute for any other color. But the white candle is also used particularly for cleansing and purification. Use a white candle for House Blessings, or for cleansing any space. Use a white candle for invoking and honoring divinity. Use a white candle for pure energy. Use a white candle for inspiration, for clarity, for peace.

Black Candles

The black candle, for the planet Saturn…use the energy of this candle to return-to-sender negative energy, bad thoughts, curses, ill-wishes sent your way. Use the energy of the black candle for retribution and justice. Use the black candle to catch the bad guy, to banish something (or someone) nasty. Use the black candle to regain personal power taken from you through injustice.

Third...What do you do with your candle?

The following information is a paragraph taken from my online book, Natural Magick the Gray Witch Way:

You can work with tea candles, votive candles, pillar candles, or hoodoo seven day candles. You’ll allow these spell candles to burn themselves out at one sitting, or you’ll light them at appropriate times over the course of a period of time. You will save the wax from these candles to be used in mojo bags; you’ll bury it; throw it into running water; or toss it in the trash. You will prepare these candles to work their magick when you anoint (dress) these candles with a variety of magickal oils– or a little olive oil, if you don’t have a stock of magickal oils on hand. You will use your athame, or another sharp object, to carve into the spell candle the name of your target, sigils and symbols relating to your intention, or designs of your own creation. You will roll these oiled candles in a variety of pulverized crushed herbs depending on your intentions and the desired outcome you wish for your magick.

Spell-a-Day:

Monday -- Friday

pll-aesthetics: “ “witchcraft + magic aesthetic (inspiration from witches of east end). ” ”

Here’s inspiration for a spell a day, Monday-Friday…to connect with powerful spiritual entities, beat writer’s block, be delightfully successful in your newest business venture, get that marriage proposal you’ve been waiting for, and find your true inner beauty.

We’re going to be working with my favorite kind of magick…Candle Spells! I’m including herbs and stones, oils, and magickal incantations. I’m assuming that if you’re reading this, you’re a magickal practitioner who is going to know how to use the correspondences and all the magickally scrumptious ingredients to put together and cast a spell. But just in case you’re not– be sure to read the article above to get a feel for what Candle Magick is all about.

Below you'll find everything you’ll need to know to whip up some delightfully witchy results for a full week of Magick!

Spell For the Day: Monday

Spirit Guide Connection
(find and connect with your Spirit Guide)

Who is your spirit guide? Are they real?…Yes! They are beings who inhabit the spirit world and are connected to you in some way– to protect you, to guide you, to teach you. You can call them angels, or guardian angels, or they may be spirits of your ancestors, or spiritual beings of a higher evolution than us. They may come to you as nothing more than a small voice in your head that you’re barely aware of, the voice that warns you of danger in the moment, the voice that makes you hesitate just for that split second that was needed when another car runs a red light, or convinces you to postpone a trip and avoid an accident. They may give you warnings in the form of premonitions, or dreams, or visions. They also guide you as you explore and discover your spirituality and your life’s path.

It’s imperative that you connect with your Spirit Guide, and the following spell will help you do just that.

Blue candles/Planet: Moon/Herbs: calamus, cardamom, jasmine, myrrh, sandalwood, vanilla/Stones: aquamarine, chalcedony, moonstone, sapphire/Visions Oil: star anise, angelica, kava kava*

Sweet Guardian Spirit, my teacher, my guide;
Touch my shoulder, stay by my side.

Travel with me on this journey called life;
Protect me from harm, evil, and strife.

Spell For the Day: Tuesday

Go’in to the Chapel
(matrimony spell)

You’re in Loooove! He loves you, you love him (or She loves you and you love her). But for some reason that all important question isn’t getting asked. You’re the perfect couple, kindred souls, coupled spirits, everything is all hunky-dory in the love department. It’s just a matter of who, how, and when those four important little words are going to get said. Here’s a little magick to put some fire under it!

Red candles/Planet: Mars/Herbs: allspice, basil, coriander, ginger, marigold, nutmeg/Stones: garnet, jasper (red), rhodocrosite, ruby/Love Oil: palmarosa, ylang ylang, ginger, rosemary, cardamom

My partner, my love;
Without you, what would life be?

To seal our love and build our dreams,
Will you marry me?

Spell For the Day: Wednesday

Loosen the Pen
(getting rid of writer’s block)

We’ve all done it, those of us who write. We have sat there and stared in a stupor before a blank piece of paper or a blank computer screen. The thoughts wouldn’t come, the words wouldn’t come, and the ideas wouldn’t jell. There’s probably mundane ways to break writer’s block, but anything that I’ve tried takes time; you wind up just having to wait it out. I’m impatient. And if you’re a writer with deadlines to meet and assignments to complete, you can’t just sit around waiting for your brain to wake up and that elusive Muse to whisper in your ear. I like the idea of a magick spell to break writer’s block, to get the ball rolling, or the pen writing, or the keyboard clicking.

Yellow candles/Planet: Mercury/Herbs: anise, eye-bright, lavender, marjoram, sage, slippery elm/Stones: agate, aventurine, jasper (mottled), mica/Mercury Oil: lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint

Magickal Muse, whisper in my ear;
Put pen to paper, make my thoughts run clear.

The words will come, the ink will flow;
My brain runs free– and off we go!

Spell For the Day: Thursday

Goin’ for Broke
(business success)

Whether you’re starting a business, or you’re trying to give an old business a new jump start, or you’re thinking about starting a business and you haven’t quite decided to take the plunge, here’s a little witchy magick to bring you success in your business ventures. May this business magick bring glittering twinkles and stardust, bursting fireworks, lots of customers and sales, and money piled high as corn at fourth of July!*

Purple candles/Planet: Jupiter/Herbs: anise, dandelion, hyssop, mint, poppy seeds, star anise/Stones: amethyst, pyrite, kunzite, aventurine/Business Success Oil: bergamot, basil, patchouli, cinnamon

Success and Prosperity shine on me;
The Midas touch will set me free.

Money, success, and accomplishment flow in;
The universe shouts, “Win, win, win!!”

Spell For the Day: Friday

The Goddess in Me
(beauty and self-empowerment)

I am pretty damn terrific!…say it!! Repeat it, shout it, believe it, feel it, wallow in it. Pretend you’re standing at the summit of a mountain, or you’re standing on the roof of your house, or the top of the Empire State Building and shout, as loud as you can ~ I am pretty damn terrific!!

Now get your gorgeous damn terrific selves busy and cast this spell to draw in all that beautiful powerful over-the-top magnificent Energy!

Pink candles/Planet: Venus/Herbs: aster, catnip, geranium (pink), hibiscus, licorice (the root), willow/Stones: rose quartz, moonstone, emerald, lapis lazuli/Beauty Bath: lavender, rosemary, spearmint, comfrey root, thyme

I am Powerful and Beautiful;
It’s the Goddess in me.

I am Woman Supreme;
By the power of three!*

*Note: the oils and the beauty bath are courtesy of “Incense, Oils, & Brews” by Scott Cunningham. I’ve left the amount of each ingredient used open to your own discretion. As for the oils, personally, I prefer olive oil as a base.

*Note: “…as high as corn at fourth of July”: for those of you unfamiliar with this term, it’s a Mid-western farm thing. When fourth of July rolls around, the corn should be Knee-High!

*Note: the number “3” holds lots of magickal implications– there is the goddess trinity (maiden, mother, crone); there is the infamous line to draw in energy for your spells (by the awful awesome power of three times three); in magick concoctions, it’s often three ingredients called for; and so it goes.

A Woman's Life Transitions

Maiden

I suddenly come alive within my body in wonder and acknowledgment of it’s miracle.  I feel it as I am, it is, I am…I am…I am, I keep telling myself in amazement.  I’m here, on the inside, looking out, listening, learning, watching, absorbing.  No one knows this, the people around me seem unaware of it, the world seems unaware of it, but it’s true.  I wave my hands wildly, my spirit trying desperately to be acknowledged, to be recognized.  I’m like a sponge ready to absorb all that life has to offer me, all that I can grasp with eager hands, an eager soul, an eager body, an eager mind.  What will I feel?  What will I learn?  How will I grow?  How do I begin this journey in earnest, really, how do I push off and begin to move forward?   And how will I know when I’ve reached my destination?

Mother

They all turn to me– the children, the husband, the community, the world.  I am the center of the wheel.  The universe is spinning around me as I create, build, grow, come alive with new ideas, and immerse myself in new projects.  The spokes of the wheel come to me, racing through space and time from all directions, and me solitary and still at the center, taking the blows of life full-force.  I am in the middle of life, going at a hundred miles an hour, watching the world around me race by in a blur of color and shapes.  This is my time, my time to succeed, my time to taste the glory of life, my time to fill all the empty spaces.  I feel that all the world, all the wild things in it, all the green things in it, are growing from something within the center of me.  I was, I am, I will be.  How can I keep from being absorbed by all the frenetic scattered energy and activity around me?  How can I maintain my own identity without losing it amongst the myriad roles that I play in this life?

Crone

Sometimes I’m tired, tired of the physical struggles of life.  I’m tired of cleaning this house, I’m tired of trying to pull everything together for everyone around me.  I’m tired of carrying life’s responsibilities on my shoulders for so long, through so much, through good times and through crises.  I’m tired; I’m old and I’m tired.  I would just like to sit in a chair, beneath a tree, with my hand on a cat and listen…listen to the wind in the leaves, listen to the earth beneath my feet, listen to the cat beneath my hand, listen to the birds and voice of nature.  I want to be still, if even for a moment, and listen to the whisper in my ear, the voice of the goddess.  She’s calling to me now, her voice laced with a sense of urgency.  She’s waiting for my answer.  Have I learned enough?  Have I done enough?  Have I finished my tasks?  What is left to do?

Crafting Your Magic:

Free yourself of those things that bind you, bind those things you need freedom from. Cast spells for release, relief, and emancipation; but make sure that you are not unintentionally restricting someone else’s freedoms with your magic, your expectations, or your emotions-- such as jealousy. Remember, your thoughts are pure energy and can set magical vibrations into motion.

Opposite energies are flying high during the Snow Moon. Use the vibrations generated from this energy to your advantage-- remember that “opposites attract”. Protection magic cast during this time is especially effective and potent.

"Thoughts"

Magick & Witchcraft;
Writing & Literature; and Age

Writing. Oh how beautifully freeing it is to write. Just write. Whatever you feel, whatever is important to you. Just write. Write like it matters, and it will.

Magick & Witchcraft

1. People get so upset about the fine line between ‘black’ magick and ‘white’ magick. There really isn’t any line at all. The intensity and direction of our magick depends upon our boundaries and how deeply we will allow someone to encroach upon our territory, our person, our life…when these boundaries are broached, that’s usually when magick begins to take on shades of gray…and in that case, it winds up being about protection and self-preservation.

2. What kind of witch am I?…The ‘me’ that I normally am naturally slips into the witch that already exists. If you are a normally bitchy person, you’re going to be one fine and mighty bitchy witch. If you are a passive individual, so shall you be a passive witch. The witch that you are is so wrapped up with the psyche that is ‘you’ that it is one and the same– indistinguishable from the rest of your humanity.

Writing

1. The best writing that I’ve ever done is writing that I get lost in.

2. Literature Classes…The most idiotic thing– this teacher in a Literature class in high school had us read some prose, and then she had us tell her how we interpreted it. So I read it, and I told her. I don’t remember today exactly what it was I read, but I do remember the intensity of feeling it created and the enthralling layers of personalities and possibilities that unfolded.

When I finished telling this teacher my breathless interpretation of this prose, she quietly and unceremoniously told me that I was wrong.

“Now”, she begins, “this is what it really means…”

I was stunned and crestfallen– had everything that I had experienced during my reading been false?

Moral:

Some people should never teach art or literature…those people who are trapped inside an invisible box they can’t see out; those people who are trapped in small minds and small lives; those people who can only justify their existence by feigned superiority; those people who insist that everyone must view the world through their eyes; those people who color all flowers red and all leaves green; those people who only see the sky as blue.

Age

1. The older I get, the nearer the past seems.

2. Life doesn’t slow down as you get older, it winds itself up tighter so that you have to run faster.

When the Dead Come Through

T H E _ C O L L E C T O R

I’m not a medium, not usually, anyway. But once in a while, when doing a tarot reading, the dead come through. A few of these occasions have been like a small footnote to the whole process and the tarot session itself; but there have been several times that were quite profound and memorable, either to me, or to my client, or both.

Once such case involved the four of pentacles. I was using the Rider/Waite deck, and the imagery on this card is that of a male figure with both feet firmly planted on his gold coins, and his arms wrapped protectively around two more coins. The common interpretation for the four of pentacles is The Miser, that penny-pinching individual who refuses to part with his money.

As some of you know, I read using the intuitive method, which basically means that I simply allow my sub-conscious to run amok and pick up, see, or feel anything that the images on a tarot card might spontaneously trigger. Needless to say, most interpretations brought up this way have absolutely nothing to do with the traditional meaning of a card. These flashes of insight, visions, feelings, and such are often way out in left field, and sometimes the only one who can really make sense of them is my client.

That was the case this day:

As I was staring at the figure on this card, the four of pentacles, the entity of an old man was suddenly very present (in my mind and around us). I kept talking and staring and talking and staring intently at the card: “Oh, my.” I said, overwhelmed by the feelings. “His hands are curled up tight in a fist.” And as I said this I was grimacing and clenching my own fists, drawing my hands up to my chest. “Oooh, it’s icky!” I said, still grimacing, overwhelmed at the emotions and sensations. It was awful.

The woman stopped me, sort of abruptly. I think she was concerned for me.

“Wait,” she said, “I have to tell you…”

And then she went on to explain that her father-in-law had recently passed away and had left her and her husband what amounted to a small fortune, a life-changing amount of money. But that wasn’t all. When he died, she told me, he was frightened, and he was in pain, and he was fighting the death process with all his might. It was terrible to watch.

“He curled his hands up to his chest, clenching them into tight fists.” she said, staring straight into my eyes, wanting me to understand.

I looked down at the male figure on the four of pentacles tarot card, and I knew that what I was really looking at was this woman’s father-in-law.

Bad Mojo
Is Someone Messing with You

Bad mojo, yes it’s real. Is it just a string of bad luck, or synchronistic events? No. It’s so much worse. It’s so definable. You’ll know when you are the victim of bad mojo, most definitely. There is nothing subtle about Bad Mojo. It’s vindictive. It’s like a sucker punch to the face. You’ll feel the swirling gray dangerous energy; sneaky energy sent by sneaky jealous mean-spirited individuals for whatever reason. When you feel it, you’ll know it. And when you know it, you’ll be able to do something about it. Yes, there are defenses for this type of magick. No, you don’t have to be a victim.

It’s here with me now, this energy, wreaking havoc in our every day life. Vehicles and appliances are breaking down in rapid succession, one after the other, too numerous and too fast to be coincidental. Illness and unusual incidents are sprouting from the black energy; a series of opportunities lost to bizarre synchronistic events. Bad mojo is swift and destructive. It will leave your head spinning, and it often sends people into a panic. You have no idea how many messages and inquiries I get by people terrified of the fact that they may be targets for malicious magick.

Let’s see, where do I start? I would say “don’t panic”, but that’s like telling someone not to be afraid, or to stop crying, when it’s this emotion that they feel. You can’t stop someone from worrying, or panicking, or being afraid. In fact, it’s okay to be afraid; it will feed the adrenaline; it will add to the power and rush of your energy; it will promote whopping explosive movement of magickal intentions.  So, “Be afraid, be very afraid”, as the over-worked movie line goes.

I feel like tapping into the number 9…(By the awful awesome power of 3 times 3)

Nine herbs for protection, to shield from unnatural illness, to ward off hexes and black magick:

1. marjoram

2. star anise

3. cumin

4. garlic

5. dragon’s blood

6. sandalwood

7. ginger

8. plantain

9. basil

How do we use these 9 herbs?

1. Marjoram:

Place a small bundle of marjoram leaves at the four corners of your house or property, and this includes everywhere you may be for extended periods of time– like your place of employment. These leaves should be replaced periodically to keep the strength and power going, say at each Full Moon cycle.

2. Star Anise:

To ward off hexes and bad mojo, you’re going to want to make a conjure bag to carry on you– in your pockets, in your purse, put it under your pillow at night. This bag will be your friend, your very close friend. About the only thing you’re going to do without it is shower– but you can still keep it close by!)

Besides the Star Anise, add a pinch of sea salt, garlic, and sage to the bag, along with a snippet of your hair, or fingernail clippings.*

3. Cumin:

You’re going to mix cumin seeds with sea salt to create a mixture you can sprinkle around the perimeter of your yard, around the foundation of your house, across the thresholds and window sills to keep Evil out. One word of caution here, if you use this stuff to sprinkle around the perimeter of your yard, everywhere you pour the sea salt, it will kill the grass. The first time I did this, I didn’t realize this would happen. We got up the next morning and looked out our upstairs bedroom window to see a clear and definite line of dead grass running all the way around the front yard. I thought this was hilarious. My (ex)husband did not see the humor in it.

4. Garlic:

For our purpose here today, the best thing I can tell you to do with garlic is to add it to your scrub water and go to town in your home– wash the hell out of the floors, the stair wells, and the front steps. If you do all this and you still feel Evil breathing down your neck, wash the walls and the windows, stair banisters, and dark and spooky closets and cubbies. Evil can run, but it can’t hide.

5. Dragon’s Blood:

Burn Dragon’s Blood, the chunks or powdered form, on charcoal. I’ve got some Dragon’s Blood incense that I bought the other day that I’m going to try for house cleansing and see how well it works. Frankly, I don’t like messing with those little round charcoals– and for newbies, this charcoal that I’m talking about is not the charcoal that you buy for grills, it’s different. It’s safer, and you can burn it indoors, just be sure that you have a strong fireproof receptacle to burn it in. I’m still going to cross my fingers and go with the incense; it smells wonderful! (“Be gone, Evil!”, says Dragon’s Blood, kicking Evil in the ass as it rushes out the door.)

6. Sandalwood:

This is another Evil chaser that can be used for smudging, as in incense, or powdered sandalwood can be added to Brick Dust and Sea Salt and sprinkled across all the thresholds to your home. And I do mean *All* the thresholds!…main entrances; back doors; every single window– including tiny basement windows and attic windows; odd entrances like cellar doors, garage doors, etc.

7. Ginger:

For protection keep a whole ginger root under your bed or your pillow at night to ward off Evil Spirits that will prey on you when you are at your most vulnerable, when you’re asleep! This is another herb that is exalted for its ability to ward off Evil from property (and to protect those individuals who reside on said property). Keep it in conjure bags scattered throughout your house; use it to sprinkle doorways, sidewalks, and walkways. Ginger is reputed to slap negative nasty behavior and energy right back to the unfortunate turd who threw it at you– and they will feel it keenly. Take advantage of this.

8. Plantain:

This little herbal magick is going where you go. Tradition advises that you use the roots and leaves of plantain kept in a conjure bag in your vehicle to protect you from the jealousy of those who envy you. Apparently, it’s assumed that Envy travels, following you like a stealthy thief in the night, ready to steal your peace of mind, your self-confidence, and your success. (As a side note, plantain and calamus root are powerful partners for Safe Travel mojo bags, which everyone in my family keeps in their vehicles.)

9. Basil:

What a versatile herb!…Okay, here we go:

1) A Cleansing Wash– add it to your mop water, along with rosemary and a pinch of sea salt and scrub your floors with it.

2) A Dry Wash– sprinkle the dried herb on your floors, and using your Broom, sweep the basil and Evil right out of your house, swooshing them right out the front door. (You can even stamp your foot and swear and cuss a little, let the universe know just what you think about the situation. You’ll feel better, trust me.)

3) Body Wash– in a good sized glass container, make a tincture of Basil that you will use for 9 days to wipe down your body, using a white cloth. On the last day, stand at the threshold of your front door, and throw out any remaining water in the jar. Along with this water, you will be throwing out Evil energy, nasty intentions from nasty people, hate, spite, jealous, vindictiveness, plotting, and gossip. (Listen close, as the water hits the ground, you might be able to hear a squeal or a grunt as this energy is thrown back upon the individuals who are responsible for sending it.)

*NOTE: Fingernail clippings– to some people, the idea gives them the “ewwww” factor. But to me, it seems perfectly natural, as it probably does to most magickal practitioners.

Now I’m going to reveal my little secret/slash-tip:

To collect my own fingernails, to be used in magicks beneficial to Me, I wait until they get very long before I clip them. But there’s more…I paint them various colors to correspond with the type of magick I might need to benefit myself: green polish/healing; yellow polish/to facilitate communication and creativity; red/for love and passion spells; blue/for moon spells, those things that deal with the feminine mysteries, psychism, visions, dreams. You get the point. I carry the idea of “Personal Concerns”, aka fingernail clippings, one step further than the norm. I’ve never heard this idea anywhere else, so I don’t know if anyone has ever thought of doing this or not. But it works for me.

Getting Ready for
Some Ouija Board Fun

Ouija Board! We played with one. I think my mom still has it somewhere. AND no we never had "evil" spirits!

How do you detect the presence
of spirits in your house?

1

This is my question-of-the-week, and I thought it would be refreshing to get away from the topic of relationships for a while.  Spirits are always interesting, though they are not always fun, but mostly (from my own experience) they actually are.  This is just me, or maybe it’s that I’ve only had pleasant or neutral experiences with them so far.  For whatever reason, I just don’t feel “frightened” by them.

I have a friend that I have done House Cleansings with around the Omaha area, and the one thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot of the time you won’t have to ask yourself if you have a spirit in your house, you will most definitely know.  We've come across some extreme cases, real “hauntings” with something that is unpleasant, or obnoxious, or invasive in a very negative way.  Through this experience, visiting other people’s homes and talking to them about their situations, I realize that some people are just naturally frightened by the idea of the ethereal…ghosts, spirits, anything down this road.

The house that we live in now has always had spirit activity, and I’ve only recently learned from some of my daughters, since they’ve grown, that when they were small there was an unpleasant “something” on the landing (we have a split level home).  One of my daughters told me that she felt it so strongly, and it was such a scary menacing presence to her, that she was often afraid to go up and down the stairs.  Years afterwards, when I began to regularly (key word here is “regularly”) cleanse the house, this entity disappeared.

I remember the exact day I decided I had enough.  I was sweeping down the stairs on a day that I was all alone, which rarely happened with our large home-schooling family, when I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up and a rush of goose bumps come up my legs.  This was accompanied by the very unnerving sensation of someone (a presence) behind me.  Did this scare me?  No, I actually found it interesting, and it did make me angry.  I considered this an obnoxious invasion of my personal space.  I threw the broom down and, muttering under my breath, I stalked off around the house to gather up white candles, and incense, salt and water, cussing the whole time.  I guess I felt it was an inconvenience that was unnecessary, and I would have to take the time to straighten this spirit out and set some boundaries, rather than being able to get all the “Stuff” done that I wanted to get done while I was on my own!

My kids claimed later, and continue to do so to this day, that I tend to do too good a job of cleansing, and some of the entities we have shared this space with were actually interesting, just an integral part of the house and it’s atmosphere.  So I’ve let up over the years, acknowledging that there’s enough room in this old house for everyone, as long as we all play nice in the sandbox.  There have only been a handful of times in the last 20 years when I’ve had to draw some boundaries and shoo a spirit away.

Anyway, I digress, on to the subject at hand.  The individual who asked me this question is obviously not sure what constitutes a spirit’s presence, and what may just be some sort of natural occurrence, or an overactive imagination. Let’s look at all those tell-tale signs of spirit activity ~

1)  Scents:  It’s happened to me before.  I’ll smell my grandmother’s perfume, or her favorite flower (roses).  You might smell cigars or cigarette smoke in a house where no one smokes.  You might smell a loved one’s favorite food.  Anytime you pick up a scent that is not explainable on a physical level, you might want to consider that it’s coming from another source.  I’ve heard about (but never experienced personally) the unpleasant and obnoxious odors of malevolent spirits.  This is just something to keep in mind.  Most of the time it’s all good, but once in a while you might run into something unusual.  The sense of smell is just another one of our six senses, just another way we learn and experience and process information about the world around us.

2)  Noises:  Here we go again, another one of our six senses.  Several times over the past few decades, since my grandmother’s death, I have heard her call my name.  Often this has happened in the dead of night and woken me out of a deep sleep, but there have been occasions where this has happened during the day, when I’m wide awake to begin with, and usually when I am alone.  It’s cool, nothing scary.  She’s just touching base, letting me know that she’s still near, that there is still some sort of connection.   Besides hearing voices, there are other odd sounds that may indicate spirit activity... knocking, scraping, footsteps, growling (not usually a good thing), hammering, human sounds (like hand clapping , finger snapping, muttering).  And always, you will have no logical explanation for these sounds.

3)  Temperature Changes:  We’re talking big in-your-face changes that are unexplainable through normal physics.  This means the furnace man won’t be able to explain to you a 40 degree drop in 5 seconds.  If you ask him to explain this he’s just going to stand there scratching his head; and if he’s a really savvy furnace man (who knows about ghosts and all that paranormal stuff), he’s liable to be throwing tools in his bag and scurrying from your house so fast all you see is the back of his head.  I guess there are more subtle temperature changes you can experience, but people are more liable to explain them away– a sudden cold breeze that wafts through a room, gently lifting the pages of a newspaper; a momentary “chill” that gives you a shudder.  Besides unusual temperature changes, you might experience drafts, the kind of draft that flickers and toys with candle flames, the kind of draft that can’t possibly come from anything of this world because there is no place for the draft to originate from.

4) Electronic/Electrical Malfunctions:  We’ve often heard that the spirit world has the ability to collect energy from our electrical gadgets and use this energy to manifest all kinds of paranormal phenomena.  I don’t know if any of this can ever really be scientifically proven, but it seems that a lot of these occurrences (odd things happening with your electrical gadgets, lamps, lights, computers, etc.) almost always seem to precipitate a mad rush of paranormal activity.  Do you have appliances, lights, a television, computer, or other gadget that turns itself off and on? …that turns itself off and on regularly?

7)  Moving Objects:  This is pretty extreme and the fodder for many movies and television shows.  But it does happen, and the most basic kind of activity that I’ve personally witnessed (with moving objects) involved a series of cupboard doors that would be closed one minute and all open the next; drawers or doors, same thing.  I’ve yet to see anything as dramatic or theatrical as portrayed in the movies.  Remember, for a spirit to move a physical object, an object of atoms and matter, it would take an incredible amount of energy.

6)  The Goosebump Factor:  Some people are more sensitive to the paranormal and its energy than others.  There are a lot of people (a lot!) who can actually “feel” the presence of spirits, even if they are not sensitive enough to communicate with them (as a medium or psychic), they still know dang well that there is something there, and they can often pick up on positive or negative energy.  Never underestimate The Goosebump Factor.
