Autumn Equinox

September 21st

Image result for autumn leaves

The Goddess, in the death throes of the growing season, is at her most beautiful. As she moves towards the final harvest, in preparation for the dark days to come, she shines with the brilliance and color that is mirrored in the physical world as golden leaves, ripened fruit, withering vines, and frost-covered grass. The spiritual aspect of this stage is one that is just as beautiful, emphasizing once more the idea of completion and accomplishment, of finding that moment within development that culminates with depths of wisdom and the light of knowledge.

This day brings equal hours of light and dark, a second celebration of perfect equality. Beyond this day, light will gradually fade as the dark season descends upon the world. At this time of year, the ancient Druids would burn a large human-like wicker figure as part of their celebration. This figure represented the vegetation spirit, and indeed, the heralding of the dark season would bring an end to the growth and flowering of summer.

Modern Pagans may celebrate this holiday with many of the foods connected with this time of year in their area. Decorations may include leaves of autumn hues, sunflowers, pumpkins and gourds. The most amazing thing, I believe, is how this miraculous milestone of earth and time passes almost unnoticed by the mundane multitudes.

My Celebration:

I welcome the growing darkness that I know will follow Mabon. Moment by moment, day by day, it creeps up almost unnoticed. Until one day, you glance at the clock and realize that afternoon is barely over, evening has barely begun, and it is pitch dark outside.

My favorite way to celebrate Mabon is by lighting candles all over the house. In doing so I'm actually celebrating the darkness with light.

I light white candles for cleansing and purification, for Spirit, for the Goddess. I light white candles to wipe the slate clean, to start new lists, to begin new projects. I light yellow candles to celebrate the sun and its grace and dignity as it steps back to make way for the moon.

I light yellow candles to celebrate communication and everything I've ever wanted to say to anyone, and those things I might regret not saying. I light yellow candles to fill my mind with words and thoughts that run into sentences and paragraphs and pages.

I light lavender candles to celebrate the spirits I know are there but cannot see. I light lavender candles to acknowledge that little voice in my head, the one that's saved my life over the years, not to mention my sanity.

I light green candles to celebrate and embrace the earth. I light green candles to celebrate and embrace this wonderful physical body that is mine.

I light green candles to bathe in the glow of good health and prosperity. I light green candles to feel the soles of my bare feet connect with the dying grass, the withering garden, the falling leaves.

I light one tall black taper candle that is me, to celebrate the spark of life I carry, to celebrate future days to come, to celebrate my passage through another year...and to acknowledge and embrace my mortality.

Magickal Katz

In the first place, they usually come to you, you don’t acquire them; and if you happen to, they may disappear quickly, quietly, and mysteriously; leaving hardly a trace that allows you to remember they were ever there.

They return like actions for like actions, like emotions for like emotions…if you are cruel, they will return this action in kind, with the grasp of a jaw, or the swiping rake of a claw. If you are gentle, so shall they be, calmly and matter-of-factly washing your hand or your cheek as they would one of their own kind, showing in their own way their acceptance of you– in spite of your human condition. O’ joy, you are considered worthy!

Human outbursts are generally met with two reactions, either a quick departure which wreaks of not only fear but severe disapproval, or an intent stare of disdain, which wreaks of superiority and quiet wisdom. They refuse to remain in the company of one who would wish them ill. They refuse to remain in the company of one who offends their senses. They are what they are, and they do as they do, and in the process they cross paths with the human race and our wearisome state of being. They know, they figured us out long ago.

Correspondences for Cat Magick

Day: Monday

Planet: Moon

Element: Water

Color: blue, silver, purple

Herbs: calamus, gardenia, sandalwood, willow, chickweed, bladder wrack, columbine, Dittany of Crete, catnip, belladonna, apple,
African Violet

Stones: chalcedony, moonstone, sapphire, pearl, aquamarine, selenite

Magick: visions, seeing spirits, protection, astral travel, fairies

Black Cat Oil

Ingredients: sage, bay leaves, myrrh, iron,
black cat hair

Base: almond oil– for romance, to draw a lover to you; castor oil– to draw spirits for spirit contact, for protection, to break bad spells and hexes

The black cat is not viewed as evil by the magickal practitioner. On the contrary, this animal is believed to be imbued with magickal connections to the spirit world. It’s often a favored familiar for a witch because of it’s otherworld qualities; its intelligence and sense of intuition, its beauty, its mystery, its loyalty, and its magick.

Black cats are also believed to be the favored form for shape-shifting spirits. This is why it’s considered bad luck to harm a black cat– this cat may not be a cat at all, but an entity from the spirit world who’s scrutinizing you as closely as you are watching it. Treat the black cat with respect and kindness, and you will receive this same treatment in return…harm this creature, and you may regret it.

Cat Superstitions

Dreaming of white cat means good luck.

To see a white cat on the road is lucky.

It is bad luck to see a white cat at night.

If a cat washes behind its ears, it will rain.

A strange black cat on your porch brings prosperity.

A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it.

A cat sleeping with all four paws tucked under means cold weather ahead.

When moving to a new home, always put the cat through the window instead of the door, so that it will not leave.

When you see a one-eyed cat, spit on your thumb, stamp it in the palm of your hand, and make a wish. The wish will come true.

In the Netherlands, cats were not allowed in rooms where private family discussions were going on. The Dutch believed that cats would definitely spread gossip around the town.

To reverse the bad luck curse of a black cat crossing your path, first walk in a circle, then go backward across the spot where it happened and count to 13.

Image result for black cat in autumn leaves

A cat is not a panting, jumping, blindly adoring dog. Strike a cat and you may forever lose their trust and confidence in you. When our cats were kittens, and even once in a while yet, when they need to be reprimanded for climbing on shelves where they don’t belong, hanging from the living room curtains, or some other distinctly mischievous catly behavior, we use a small spray bottle of water in order to tell them that we don’t approve of what they are doing. After you’ve used this method a few times, all you have to do is reach for the bottle and they quickly scamper off the forbidden perch, scattering hither and yon to their secret hiding places within the house.

Personal Essay:

I Am Not a Lot of Things

I am not an intellectual. I don't know why it's automatically assumed if someone likes to write that they are going to be incredibly intellectual and knowledgeable on all the hot topics of the politically correct present day.

I hate politics, of any kind. I'm the most non-political person that you're ever going to come across. I know, I know. I can already here the sighs and the wagging pointy fingers declaring that this is something I should be up on, something I should pay attention to, something I should be at least minimally involved in. (laBut I'm not.) It is the driest, most boring topic in the world, and I believe that the whole political system is akin to the public school system and parents: they want you to think that you have a say and some influence on a subject, but really-- you don't.

I love my spirituality and my magickal path, but I am not an expert on all the ancient and infinitely numerous pantheons, practices, or theologies. I'm not into the enthusiasm of people who want to historically dissect some tradition and then try to reconstruct it letter by letter, moment by moment, archaic rule by archaic rule, outdated practice by outdated practice. This is just too much detail for my weary little brain; and besides, this is not ancient times, and there will be better, more modern, more practical ways to practice an ancient path in the present day, a way that will build and expand spirituality and enhance our lives in the modern world.

I am not detail oriented. I hate reading long boring historical tomes on witchcraft, or the tarot, or anything actually. It makes me cringe when I turn to a page in any tarot book (including my 1st one) and read “...the tarot was used in Egypt 5000 years ago.” First, I'm not so sure that this is true, probably because I don't take the time to read all the numerous dry history books on the subject, the ones that probably contain a few facts and a multitude of theories. And honestly, this sounds awful, but I just don’t care. (I can hear a barely audible gasp.) Is this so awful? No, not really. Using one of my late husband's favorite quotes: “It need not pertain.”...and it doesn't pertain, to me at least.

I've had a few rare occasions on a radio program where I was asked some incredibly detailed intellectual type question on a topic. I know that I have given them more than a few seconds of dead air time as I pause, thinking in blind panic-- Do they expect me to know this off the top of my head? Do they really expect me to carry on a long dialogue on this very complicated detailed intellectual academic topic? Are they kidding? Head's up peoples-- this is what Research Books are for.

(Apparently, I'm a Big Picture kinda' girl.)

I am not necessarily a good housekeeper. I was at one time. I use to think that housekeeping was an “Art”...and then I had 7 kids. Housework quickly became something I was too tired to do, something that had to be put on the back burner, behind laundry, and baby bathing, and story book reading, and grocery shopping, and breast feeding, and home schooling. And then later in life, after the kids were grown up, I discovered that there was a whole bunch of Important Things that I needed to be doing, like writing books, and other cool stuff, so then housework got pushed even further down the line. Do not get me wrong. I repeat, don't misunderstand me. I'm a Libra. I love my surroundings to be clean and beautiful and totally Zen. It's just that now-a-days, sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. And when they aren't, I know that they will be eventually.

I am not a seamstress.

I'm not necessarily a good cook, though my kids would tell you I am because they don't know any better.

I am not business oriented. Finances confuse me, and reading a tax document is like reading a foreign language.

I am not mechanical...hooking up the DVD machine is enough of a challenge for me, and there's only three options, all color coded-- red to red, white to white, yellow to yellow.

I am not always a good judge of character, and I'm empathic, you'd think I would be. I tend to be naive and trusting. I wouldn't lie and steal, or exaggerate; so I automatically assume no one else will either.

I was not a good wife, at least I don't think I was. I'm like some crusty old bachelor who's set in his ways and gets all scowly if someone rearranges the pantry. I like my space, and I don't want someone else's fingerprints all over it.

I am not good at remembering things-- Lots of things! Some people might think I'm rude when I forget to answer their messages, but I have a good reason...I just forgot that you sent me one! I make lists all the time: notes to myself about things to do for the day, notes about writing projects, notes about phone calls, notes about Very-Important-Business-Emails that can't be ignored; notes about what to do the next day...ad infinitum.

I am not a party girl. (Libra likes peace and quiet.)

I am not a team player. (Think tarot card: The Hermit)

I am not a good gardener...I grow fond of all growing things, and some of the growing things in my garden I grow fond of turn out to be weeds, and I haven't got the heart to pull them out, or cut them down. Houseplants-- forget it. I have a black thumb with houseplants, and the smart ones commit suicide before I ever get them home to re-pot.

As you can see, I'm not a lot of things.

September ~ Crafting Your Magick

Feminine energy is highlighted, receptive energy. Cast magic to draw inward, magic to draw those things-- both intangible and material-- to you that you need to fill the void. The Goddess is in the spotlight. Work magic to benefit female issues, such as fertility, independence, and protection.

The Wine Moon works its magic in the area of love and relationships. Cast spells to discover your soul mate, find a lost love, or nurture a secret desire. The energy of Libra will bring balance to all magic cast at this time, and its energy promotes the very essence of love and sex. Cast spells now to promote healthy sexuality and to maintain or regain physical health of the reproductive system.

Concentrate on the third eye chakra, opening the doors to psychic experiences. Prepare to enter the autumnal dark months with the clairvoyant vision to see well beyond, into the light of the future.

This Reading is

for You

alone 2

The reading that I’m doing this morning is for you. I don’t know who you are, how the circumstances in your life stands, or whether you will even find this reading. But I woke up this morning with the distinct feeling that someone needs this. I’m going to draw three cards for you, and these cards will be a window into your life, the people who inhabit it, and those issues that are important to you. You will recognize yourself, you will recognize the people who may show up within this group of cards; and you will know, with absolute certainty, that these cards are speaking especially to you, specifically to you, for you and you alone.

The cards:

You’re just beginning a new relationship, perhaps you’re even in transition yet, moving from one relationship to the next. This process can be frought with indecision, that type of second guessing that makes your movement through life feel jerky. There are times that you may even carry around a rock in the pit of your stomach. So many of life’s big changes are like that, and relationships are one of the biggest. But you will get through it. That heavy stone-like feeling in your mid-section will go away, and what seemed new and slightly scary will become routine so quickly that you almost won’t notice the transition.

In order to successfully make this transition, and in order to work towards this new relationship with hopes that it will grow into something lasting and important, you will have to work through issues of defensiveness and insecurity– the scum that’s usually left over from previous experiences. This will take time and patience, both on your part, and on the part of your new partner, or your potential partner. This can also be a measuring stick for the character of this new person in your life. They should be sensitive enough to your feelings that they respect your wishes, whatever those boundaries may be at this time.

Eventually life will come full circle, it always does…right up until the end. This is one of those things we can be sure of, just like death and taxes, as the old saying goes. The most important thing to remember is not to hinder your own freedom with your own hangups. It’s bad enough when other people impact our lives with restrictions and invisible boundaries we don’t want and didn’t ask for; but it’s even worse when we do this to ourselves. How many things in life we might never accomplish or leave unfinished, because we didn’t allow ourselves to proceed naturally. Proceed naturally now…what else can you do?

The number three is relevant to you and your life at this moment; and I feel that this has to do with the area of relationships. It’s very possible that you can’t move forward because you are still staked to one spot, to one person, or point of contact. If you don’t learn to let go, to move on, to forgive, to give up and get on with it, to slide on by to the next level…you will stagnate. Life is a series of progressions. Life is constant movement, sometimes so swift and unrelentless that it makes us dizzy. But life is never suppose to be still– at least not the type of still that prohibits new growth. Lift one foot and take that first step. The second step will be easier. I promise. It always is.

Though you may keenly feel life’s burdens at this moment, that will change. You’re at the threshold of a new day, a new dawn. Once you take that first hesitant step towards your future, the rusty cogs and wheels of life will begin turning again. They might be a little stiff and noisy at first, but the more they move, the smoother the journey will become. Sometimes it’s just getting started that’s the hard part.

You struggle with finding balance now, but your struggle is with that which will smooth out naturally, all on it’s own. Don’t fight it so much. When you do this you are actually working against your own energy. This will make you tired. The last thing I’m going to tell you, and maybe the most important, is not to take off on life’s grand adventure without a game plan, your game plan. When you start a journey, you should have a destination in mind, otherwise how will you know when you’ve arrived?

Court Case

The one time in your life when you will be relieved of any control over what happens to you, what happens to a loved one, what happens to a victim, or what happens to a perpetrator, will be in a court room.  The one time when fate and destiny will definitely lay in the hands of a single individual (a judge), or a group of individuals (a jury), will be in the court room.  In a world of perfection, justice would prevail in these episodes 100% of the time; but we don’t live in a perfect world, and once in a while, this system– created by men, flawed by humanity, fails.  And when it fails, it usually fails in a big way, an irreversible way, an in-your-face-I’m-gonna-wreck-your-life way.  But we don’t have to close our eyes and wait for the consequences of this system to strike us in a helter-skelter totally unpredictable whimsical fashion.  We can take control of destiny, of fate, of our own circumstances, or those of a loved one, through very old, very powerful, very successful mojo…Court Case Mojo.

The herbs most likely used for court case magick include: calendula, cascara sagrada, deer’s tongue, dill, little John the conquer root, black mustard seed, poppy, shame brier, sumac, sugar, tobacco, slippery elm, cayenne pepper, cloves, belladonna.  For really vile cases, the most poisonous, disgusting, prickly, thorny types of herbs and substances you can think of is what you should be using.  (I’m sure there’s more than I’ve listed here, but this is a good start.)

Personal concerns:

hair, finger-nail clippings, saliva, bodily fluids/secretions, blood.  Items such as a piece of jewelry, a button from clothing, under-garments, a used Kleenex or handkerchief, a spoon, a shoe, dirt from a footprint; anything the target has touched, put in his/her mouth, an image (photograph), a signature, a hoodoo poppet, a doll (as in the Barbie doll types, with the correct hair color, dressed and named as the target) etc.

The methods:

The first method is one of my favorites and one of the most effective.  This type of spell-casting is not for the squeamish, or anyone who’s heart is not into what they’re doing 100%.  You can have no doubt that you are in the right and the target (damn them) are in the wrong.  You know when it’s right.  You can feel it, you can smell it.  The air around you will be charged with energy, with entities (spirits), it will almost inexplicably propel you along.  I don’t know how else to explain it, but when you’re called upon to cast this kind of mojo, you will know.

Hexing Poppets:

These are the poppets that make the White Witches squirm; the poppets that people find the most intriguing and sometimes frightening; the poppets that wreak of mystery, foreboding, power, retribution, and revenge. In some circles, you might find controversy and arguments where use of the black hexing poppet is concerned, but you won’t find it here.

This poppet is considered one of the ‘big guns’. When someone in your life is making circumstances impossible, when someone is wreaking havoc in people’s lives, when someone is being just plain mean and nasty above and beyond what’s acceptable– it’s time for a magickal kick in the pants.

Day: Saturday

Planet: Saturn

Element: Earth/the physical realm, manifestation (bind the target’s ability to physically harm); Air/communication, the mental realm (bind the target’s ability to speak out of turn or inflict mental pain); Fire/passion and purging (destroy the target’s will power and protective armor); Water/emotions, visions, intuition (pick up empathically the target’s next move, stay one step ahead of them, and invade their dreams)

Color: black

Herbs: Return to sender/ginger, nettle, thistle; deflection/anise, blackthorn, ginger, nettle, paprika; retribution/cayenne pepper, blackthorn, belladonna, hemlock; curse/belladonna, cloves, dragon’s blood, hemlock, pepper, wormwood

Stones: jet, obsidian, onyx (black), sardonyx, tourmaline (black)

Other Items: this will be interesting…thorns; nails– especially coffin nails, if you’ve got them; razor blades, shards of glass; poison; personal effects– you betcha’; if you’re a gritty kind of witch– a chicken heart pierced with straight pins, snake sheds, a spider’s carcass– or flies; bodily secretions– of the disgusting variety; spit inside the poppet– with vigor and emotion; a slip of paper upon which you’ve vented your anger and thrown a curse upon the target; images or objects connected in some way with the behavior of this individual or the problems that have been created because of them.

(This spell is an excerpt from my online book, “Natural Magick the Gray Witch Way”.)

Beef Tongue Court Case Spell

This quaint little spell is steeped in hoodoo tradition, and if you are squeamish, it could be a bit of a challenge.  I have actually had the pleasure of using this delightful twisted magical gun when I was going through the legal proceedings of a nasty divorce and had reached the point where I’d had enough.  Of course, right in the midst of the best part of the spell, our neighbor lady knocked on the backdoor.  My girls practically bowled her over to keep her out of the house so I could finish the job.  This spell will work for you, I can tell you this from personal experience, so stick with it and see it through– make the gray witch proud.

Items needed:

1.  A raw beef tongue (You should be able to find this in the meat department of your local grocery store.)

2.  Several slips of paper and a pen

3.  Pins and needle and thread

4.  A strip of red flannel cloth large enough to wrap up the tongue

5.  Cayenne pepper

6.  Four Thieves Vinegar

Make sure you have a decent place to work where you’ll have plenty of room to spread things out and get comfortable, this may take a while.

1.  Begin by writing the names of the judge, the attorneys, adversaries, witnesses, anyone connected to your case who may have a negative impact or influence upon it or you on these small slips of paper– one name per slip!

2. Using a sharp knife, cut small slits into the beef tongue– a slit for each slip of paper.

3.  Insert one name paper into each slit.

4.  Sprinkle the tongue with cayenne pepper and Four Thieves Vinegar.

5.  Close the slits in the tongue with straight pins, or do what I did– sew the slits shut with needle and thread.

6.  Wrap the tongue in red flannel and place it in your freezer while the court case is in progress.  When you’ve reached the end of this ordeal and all is said and done, remove the tongue from your freezer and bury it in the earth.

(This spell is an excerpt from my book, “The Gray Witch’s Grimoire”.)

For anyone reading this who is especially sensitive to the darker energies and may have gotten a case of the heebie-jeebies as they’ve read their way through this article, don’t worry, you’ll be fine, believe me.  You might feel better if you’d 1) light a white candle, 2) choose a nice incense– like sandalwood or nagchampa, and light it up, and 3) sit a few small bowls of salt out about your house, or sprinkle (asperge) your space with salted water.  It’s okay– strong energy usually leaves an impression…that’s the point.
